Biography
Michael F. Gutknecht, PhD, is a research scientist at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine investigating how extracellular vesicles produced by B cells direct immunity and maintain homeostasis. His secondary interest is in assay and methodological development to better evaluate and quantitate vesicle uptake by cells and the aggregation of proteins associated with neurodegeneration. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and conducted graduate and postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia, where he studied how the innate immune system modifies breast cancer progression and pancreatic tumor vascularity. His research has been supported through NIH training grants and a Department of Defense traineeship award, and he has maintained an active role in mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.
