With roots in New Jersey and Alaska, Erica Postema VanderKooy, MD, called Tokyo, Japan home for the majority of her childhood. She initially moved to Michigan for college, completing her BA with Honors in Psychology at Calvin College. While there, she met her now-husband and they went off to medical school together at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. VanderKooy graduated from medical school with high distinction and earned the Anna Rutzky Memorial Award for pediatrics. She was inducted into AOA as a third year medical student.

Dr. VanderKooy completed her residency at the University of Michigan/C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, then worked for the University of Michigan as an outpatient pediatrician for one year while her husband finished his emergency medicine residency. They then moved to Colorado for two years, where her husband completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine and Dr. VanderKooy worked as an urgent care pediatrician for University of Colorado/Children’s Hospital Colorado. In this role, she became involved in several quality improvement projects.

Dr. VanderKooy missed outpatient pediatrics and the chance to teach residents, though, and is very excited to be in Kalamazoo. She joined the department of pediatrics in July, 2016. Her clinical interests include newborn care, breastfeeding, and acute care in the primary care setting. Her academic interests include quality improvement and resident education. In her role as associate program director, she works collaboratively with Kelly Brown, MD, pediatric residency program director, in resident education, recruitment, evaluation, scholarly activity, and oversight.

The VanderKooys have three young children. Dr. VanderKooy enjoys reading, spending time with her family, and has recently rediscovered her Alaskan roots by ice-skating on their backyard pond.
