Biography
Sandra Medinilla, MD, MPH, FACS, is a dual-board certified trauma and surgical critical care surgeon with Bronson Trauma Surgery Specialists in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She received her BA at Bryn Mawr College in Sociology. Interested in the social determinants of health, she completed her Masters in Pubic Health at Hahnemann University (now Drexel University) School of Public Health in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While working with migrant farmworkers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, she decided that immigrants and underserved communities needed quality health care and she completed her post-baccalaureate at the University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, she participated with a research laboratory for 2 years and published two articles. In 2002 she matriculated into Temple University School of Medicine. While there, she volunteered at a needle exchange clinic in North Philadelphia and started the student chapter of Physicians for Human Rights. She graduated in 2006 and completed her general surgery residency by 2011 from the same institution in North Philadelphia. After completing a surgical critical care fellowship at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore at the University of Maryland in 2012, she returned home to Delaware and worked at a Level I Trauma Center, Christiana Care Health Center for 7 years. She is dedicated to providing quality trauma care to Western Michigan by advocating for her patients who are often marginalized and segregated in health silos. She enjoys teaching and learning from medical students and residents.
