Biography

Erica Postema VanderKooy, MD, initially moved to Michigan for college, completing a bachelor's degree with honors in psychology at Calvin College. She then attended medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. VanderKooy graduated from medical school with high distinction and earned the Anna Rutzky Memorial Award for pediatrics.

Dr. VanderKooy completed her residency at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, then worked for the University of Michigan as an outpatient pediatrician for one year. She then moved to Colorado, where she worked as an urgent care pediatrician for University of Colorado Children's Hospital Colorado. In this role, she became involved in several quality improvement projects.

Dr. VanderKooy joined the Department of Pediatrics at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine in July 2016. Her clinical interests include newborn care, breastfeeding, and acute care in the primary care setting. Her academic interests include quality improvement and resident education. In her role as associate program director, she works collaboratively with the pediatric residency program director to address needs in resident education, recruitment, evaluation, scholarly activity, and oversight.
