Biography

Liz Lorbeer, EdM, MLS, began her role as the library director for WMed in 2013, and assumed the chair role in 2016. Lorbeer’s career spans over twenty-five years as a librarian and an administrator. She had previously held positions at Boston University, Rush University Medical Center, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is the past president of the Michigan Health Sciences Library Association, past elected board member to both the Medical Library Association and the Society of Scholarly Publishing, and the principal investigator to four National Network of Libraries of Medicine Express Library Digitization Award grants. In 2020, Ms. Lorbeer received the Medical Library Association President’s Award for notable and significant contributions that enhanced the health sciences librarianship profession. She earned a Data Services Specialization certificate in 2023 and the recipient of the 2024 Research, Development, and Demonstration Project Grant from the Medical Library Association. She regularly consults for publishers and vendors and has been a distinguished member of The Academy of Health Information Professionals since 2009. She holds the rank of professor and teaches scholarly communication within the medical education program. Ms. Lorbeer obtained her undergraduate degree and earned a Master of Library Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She then completed a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from Boston University.

  • Co-creator of the pay-per-view and library-subsidized unmediated document delivery service to obtain non-subscribed articles on demand. This project won the Consortium of Southern Biomedical Libraries Distinguished Library Award in 2011.
